Discover Niepoort Lagar de Baixa Baga
This Portuguese red wine is crafted from the pure passion that legendary winemaker Dirk Niepoort holds for Portugal’s native Baga grape variety. The Niepoort Lagar de Baixa Baga is a spectacular expression of the Bairrada region. By masterfully combining fruit from historic old vines with the vibrant energy of younger plantings, this exceptional red wine achieves a rare, captivating balance. The result is a complex, deeply serious Atlantic-influenced red that beautifully retains its bright youth, fresh acidity, and structural vigour.
Whether you are a long-time admirer of Niepoort’s artisan winemaking or looking to explore the elegant, food-friendly character of premium Baga, this is a great wine to try. Available to buy now in-store and online at Fareham Wine Cellar.

Niepoort in the Bairrada
While famous for his pioneering Douro Valley table wines and historic Ports, visionary fifth-generation winemaker Dirk Niepoort has long been drawn to the incredible potential of other classic Portuguese regions. This passion led to his expansion into the cool-climate, coastal Bairrada DOC, culminating in the acquisition of the historic Quinta de Baixo estate in December 2012.
The Niepoort Lagar de Baixa Baga is the brilliant result of this coastal excursion. Wine has been crafted in the Beira province of Portugal since the 10th century, and the region is globally renowned for its indigenous, thick-skinned Baga grape variety. Dirk has spent years hunting down prized, small parcels of Baga from exceptionally old vines throughout the prestigious Cantanhede sub-region, a zone famous for its chalky clay-limestone soils and cooling Atlantic maritime influence. The wines produced are light in colour and alcohol (the 2021 is 11.9% ABV), but have huge ageing potential.
About Niepoort Vinhos
Niepoort Vinhos may be small, but it is a very well-regarded Portuguese wine producer with a rich history dating back to 1842. The company was founded by Franciscus Marius Niepoort from Holland and has been family-owned for generations.
Today, the estate is steered by the legendary Dirk Niepoort, alongside the emerging sixth generation. Dirk’s children, Daniel, Marco, and Ana, have all joined the family business, ensuring the legacy continues. Notably, Dirk’s eldest son, Daniel Niepoort, has been deeply involved in the estate’s winemaking team since 2020, blending generational knowledge with low-intervention, forward-thinking viticulture. From their iconic vintage Ports to terroir-driven regional reds, Niepoort continues to set the benchmark for Portuguese wine excellence.
Our full selection of independent Niepoort wines and Ports is available to buy online for nationwide delivery or at the Fareham Wine Cellar shop at 55 High Street, Fareham.
